Key Supplements for Supporting the Heart by Wendy Gebhart

Magnesium

can be consumed in a variety of foods including nuts, leafy greens, edamame and of course chocolate. It is important for relaxing the muscles and nervous system as well as helping all organs in the body function properly especially the heart. I like magnesium glycerinate or citrate in capsule or powder form.

Omega 3 fatty acids

found in cold water fish are amazing for a healthy cardiovascular system. Omega 3's help decrease inflammation, prevent clot formation and help maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It is important when eating fish or supplementing with fish oil you check the source of the fish since many of our ocean and freshwater fish are highly contaminated. Fish oil is a great supplement and should be from a company that has high standards for third party testing and cold processing.

Polyphenols

in all dark colored berries are great for increasing nitric oxide which helps relax our blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Berries have also been shown to increase HDL our bodies beneficial cholesterol. Since the middle of winter isn't berry season in this country it is great to use medicinal syrups during this time, mixed into cereal, smoothies, yogurt, tea or taken a couple times a day by the 1/2 teaspoon full.
